FAQs
Answers to questions families often ask in the first hours and days.
What should I do when a death occurs?
If the passing was unexpected, dial 911. If it was expected and your loved one is under home care, follow the care team's guidance, then call Bow Valley Funeral Service at 403-688-1031. We answer right away and usually arrive promptly to bring your loved one into our care.
What if the death occurs late at night or on a weekend?
Our hearts and doors are open 24/7. Call us at 403-688-1031 and we will be there when you're ready. Take the time you need with your loved one first.
What if death occurs away from home?
First, local emergency services will assist. Then call us - whether across Canada or around the globe, we will coordinate bringing your loved one home.
What is the difference between a funeral and a memorial?
A funeral typically includes the physical presence of the deceased in a casket. A memorial service honours a life and may feature an urn instead. A celebration of life focuses on cherished memories.
Do we need to have a service?
Holding some form of gathering provides space for collective mourning and support. That said, some families prefer immediate cremation or burial with a memorial later - we support either path.
Where can a service be held?
At a place of worship, our funeral home, a mountain venue, graveside, or another meaningful location. We help you navigate the options.
Can we personalize the service?
Absolutely. We encourage making the service uniquely meaningful - hobbies, music, photos, readings, and cultural or religious traditions.
Is embalming required?
Not always. We recommend it for viewings. Specific situations and laws may require it, especially for international transport.
Can I make arrangements in advance?
Yes. Many find peace knowing everything is cared for. We can help you pre-plan every detail - see Why Plan Ahead.
What are appropriate expressions of sympathy?
Flowers and cards are traditional; a heartfelt condolence, charitable donation, or thoughtful visit are also meaningful. See our Funeral Etiquette guide.
