Richard Michael Lang

Richard Michael Lang died in the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital in Banff, Alberta on September 1, 2026, at the age of 79. Since 2007, he and his wife, Michale, have lived in Banff and in their Field BC home.

After completing a PhD at the University of Dallas, Texas, Richard taught for three years at the University of Seattle, Washington. In 1984, he came to Canada for a four-day vacation in the Canadian Rockies. Little did he know he would spend the next 42 years here.

Richard worked for more than 30 years as a psychologist for Alberta Health Services, working primarily with families, children, and adolescents, retiring at the age of 72. He began his clinical career in Lac La Biche, worked for a time in Airdrie and Cochrane, and spent the remainder of his working life in Calgary, where he and Michale lived for 19 years.

Richard had a passion for photography, the outdoors, and physical activity. When he wasn’t out photographing, hiking, or snowshoeing, he enjoyed working out at the Banff Springs Hotel or Field gyms. Often quiet and reserved, he had a deep capacity for loving those he held close. His keen and quirky sense of humour kept those who loved him laughing or groaning.

He is survived by his wife, Michale and their Godchildren, Grace, Sam and Emma Alger as well as their parents, Bruce and Carmen Alger. Richard doted on each of six white cats and Portia will miss him.

Richard’s send-off will be held on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at 1:00 pm at the Banff Senior Centre (above the Banff Library), 101 Bear St, Banff, AB, Canada. Donations in his memory can be made to the Banff Mineral Springs Hospital, Friends of Yoho Society, or an animal charity of your choice.
